Walter Sizulu Square of Dedication forms part of an extensive R400m development which includes some 7000 housing units, community centre, taxi rank, museum and retail developments.
Lighting Innovations supplied luminaires for a number of areas including the multi-purpose hall, line shops and even provided specialised LED lighting to the underside of the Perpetual Flame to illuminate the Freedom Charter which is etched on concrete tablets housed in a distinctive cone-shaped tower that was built using bricks from the existing historical dwellings that were demolished to provide space for the square.
This community centre provides a focus point for the historical Kliptown area and its distinctive architecture surrounds the paved square that has benches, drinking fountains and indigenous trees that all combine to provide a meeting place for the people of the area.
Kliptown seeks to explore the Soweto landscape and culture. It is the aim of the square, with its surroundings, to create an environment with a strong architectural and urban character and identity, a vibrant place of cultural and commercial activity. The physical, cultural and historic built legacy and local traditions of Kliptown are explored. One such example is the tower on the southern side of the square, which contains a place referred to as “kwashisanyama”, a Zulu word meaning “a place to prepare food”. It is envisaged that this will become an open, informal restaurant.
The square was formally opened by President Thabo Mbeki on Sunday 26 June 2005, the 50th anniversary of the signing, in the same area, of the Freedom Charter. |
